Chapter 10

"The plan is to get in and get out," Mia said as she put her rusty Ford Ranger into gear. "We're not going there to fight anything or banish anything -- just get you some clothes so you're not rotating between the same two suits anymore."

"Right," Riley nodded, buckling her seatbelt. "In and out."

"And remember, it's daylight. Nothing can hurt you in there as long as you're not scared," Mia said, pulling out into the street. "If you're not scared, there's nothing to be scared of."

The drive to Riley's house was filled with an uneasy silence, both women lost in their thoughts. As they pulled up to the ivy-covered Victorian, Mia felt a chill run down her spine despite the warm sunlight. This place had a dark history, and it was way too clear.

Don't be scared and you'll be fine Mia.

"Alright, I'll just run upstairs to grab a few things," Riley said, her eyes flickering with determination. "Make yourself at home in the living room. I won't be long."

"Sure thing," Mia replied, watching as Riley disappeared up the staircase. She hesitated for a moment before stepping into the living room, feeling as if she were intruding upon some secret world not meant for her. The last time she was in this house, she’d fled in a panic. And now she was just casually strolling in.

“Casual” wasn’t scared. If you’re not scared, you’re safe.

She glanced around the dimly lit space. Most of Riley's possessions were still in boxes, stacked on various pieces of furniture which looked like they hadn't found their final places in the room. The entire house felt like it was in a state of transition, not yet knowing what it was supposed to be.

How appropriate.

Mia heaved a sigh and slumped onto Riley's couch, feeling the weight of exhaustion tugging at her eyelids. The last few nights spent sharing her bed with Riley had been anything but restful; As much as Mia was growing to like Riley, she snored and had a habit of randomly kicking in her sleep.

And it also reminded Mia of how much she missed Sarah’s comforting presence in her bed.

"Maybe I'll just close my eyes for a second," she mused, sinking into the plush cushions. "Riley should be back down soon."

The world seemed to fade to black as sleep almost immediately claimed her. Mia found herself standing in a cramped, run-down apartment, with the Boston streets clearly visible out the window. The peeling wallpaper and grimy windows were foreign to her, but the scattered objects strewn about the room felt like pieces of her past – remnants of her life with Sarah.

"Where am I?" she whispered, her voice echoing through the desolate space. A tarnished silver locket lay open on a rickety coffee table, displaying a faded photograph of Mia and Sarah, arms entwined and faces flushed with happiness. "Why here?"

"Well, fuck. Look who the cat dragged in," a familiar voice called out from behind her, the sarcastic lilt sending shivers down Mia's spine. She turned around, searching for the source.
